Innovative Infrared Emitters Optimize the Manufacture of Vehicle Interior Fittings Using Vacuum Lamination

Innovative Infrared Emitters Optimize the Manufacture of Vehicle Interior Fittings Using Vacuum Lamination

Precisely matched infrared systems from Heraeus Noblelight are helping to provide significant improvements in the production of the interior fitting of motor vehicles. The use of Heraeus infrared emitters to assist the vacuum laminating technology at equipment and technology suppliers, 3CON, of Ebbs, Austria, is reducing cycle times by five seconds, liberating several square meters of valuable floor space and saving up to 30% in energy costs.
As a leading manufacturer of vacuum laminating plant for motor vehicle applications, 3CON is using Heraeus infrared emitters for the heating of PVC foil and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). „In contrast to the old design, fused silica emitters which we used previously, the Heraeus emitters heat the foils much faster and, at the same time, save an enormous amount of energy and foil material, says Georg Schemmerer, 3CON“s marketing manager. „That is a huge technical advance for this application which has been on the market for a long time.“
Heraeus Noblelight is showing this, alongside other innovative infrared solutions for plastics processing, at the Fakuma exhibition, which takes place in Friedrichshafen from 17th to 21st October.

Faster and energy- and space-saving. Infrared emitters optimize vacuum lamination
Doors, central consoles and instrument panels are just some of the interior fittings of a car which are made of plastic or natural fiber carrier, coated with a foam foil. The adhesive system is first applied to the foil or the natural fiber carrier. By using vacuum laminating technology, the foil is then laminated onto the carrier backing.
A series of tests carried at 3CON identified the infrared emitters which perfectly matched both the applied foils and the emitter control system developed by 3CON. The result was a reduction in cycle time by around five seconds and a targeted penetrative heating or surface heating, to comply with the adhesive system used. Previously, the fused silica emitters usually required a standby control system to provide a permanent pre-heating of around 30% and this is not necessary with the modern, fast response medium wave emitters. These are switched on only when heat is actually required. Consequently, the ambient surroundings are not needlessly warmed, resulting in significant energy savings.
Not least, the change-over to the modern emitters has allowed a considerable space saving. Before, the heaters had to be removed from under the foil to prevent overheating or damage to the foil in the event of an emergency stoppage. Because of their smaller mass, the fast response medium wave emitters cool down very quickly when switched off and their removal is no longer necessary. As a result, the six square meters formerly required as a parking area has now been freed up.

Background: Infrared Heating in Motor Manufacture
Innovative infrared heating systems form the backbone of many heating processes in modern motor manufacture. Today, an infrared emitter from Heraeus Noblelight can be found in the manufacture of at least 200 car parts. Chrome-plated interior cladding, cut-to-shape carpets, airbag housings and steering wheel caps, roof liners, glove compartments, trims and bumpers are just some of the components made of plastic. As there is such a variety of plastic components, there is also a range of individual infrared solutions to match the required heating process. However, these all have one thing in common: the infrared systems are precisely matched to both the product and the process and save energy, costs and time. If you know the process exactly, then you can improve quality and save energy. New developments and intelligent infrared systems contribute to optimized process solutions, especially in plastics processing.

3CON, of Ebbs, Austria, develops and manufactures tool- and plant technology for the manufacture of car interior fittings such as door cladding, instrument panels and many other parts. As a truly international, technology leader, 3CON supplies all prestigious OEMs and Tier 1 companies in the automobile sector

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world (179 million inhabitants). Nigeria also stands for an abundance of natural resources such as oil, gas and agricultural land and an attractive and fast growing consumer market. The Nigerian plastics, printing and packaging industry attracts massive private and public investment. Against this backdrop the German trade fair specialists fairtrade launch plastprintpack Nigeria. The 1st International Trade Show on Plastics, Composites, Chemistry and Printing & Packaging Solutions is scheduled for 28 to 30 April 2015 at the brand-new Landmark Convention Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.

The German trade show specialists fairtrade launch plastprintpack Nigeria at the brand-new Landmark Convention Centre in Lagos on 28-30 April 2015. The Heidelberg based organisers have a wealth of experience in organizing professional plast print pack shows as they also organise plast & printpack alger in Algeria (with 150 exhibitors from 23 countries and more than 2,500 visitors) and have just recently held plastprintpack & agrofood West Africa in Accra, Ghana last December featuring 81 exhibitors and 1,326 visitors.
„The idea to launch a professional platform especially for the Nigerian business community was brought up by the exhibitors and the organisers of national pavilions at our plastprintpack & agrofood West Africa 2013 in Accra last December“, says Martin März, fairtrade“s CEO. „Then we presented the project at a meeting with the economic counsellors of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden in Lagos this February and received an all-around positive feed-back. Therefore we are excited to create this new major platform for our long-term customers.“

To create valuable synergies for exhibitors and visitors alike, plastprintpack Nigeria is held in conjunction with agrofood Nigeria, the 1st International Trade Show on Agriculture & Livestock, Food, Beverage & Packaging Technology and Food, Beverages & Hospitality.

As Austria is already committed to participate with a group of companies, the Commercial Counsellor with the Austrian Embassy in Lagos, Ms Nella Hengstler, points out: „Nigeria will be the next global manufacturing hub. The sheer size of Nigeria“s market combined with its large and young work force will attract massive investments in the manufacturing industry. Machines and production materials will continue to be imported, though. I therefore welcome and support plastprintpack & agrofood Nigeria 2015 as it is important for European suppliers to be on ground early before the real run on Nigeria starts“.
The partners of fairtrade in Nigeria are AHK Nigeria-the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria and the Nigerian-German Business Association-NGBA. Andre Rönne, delegate of AHK and general manager of NGBA points out: „Increasing prosperity and the rapidly increasing population numbers are the consumer-promoting factors in Nigeria, which is also reflected by investments into the construction of shopping malls and the food processing and food packaging industry. The plastprintpack & agrofood Nigeria comes at exactly the right time, and we look forward to a constructive and successful cooperation with the fairtrade team. „

The figures of VDMA-The German Engineering Association confirm the growing investments. The Nigerian imports of plastics machinery went up from 52 million Euros to 83 million Euros in the years 2010 to 2012, an increase of 59 per cent. Printing and paper technology imports rose from 39 million Euros to 52 million Euros, a plus of 33 per cent. An increase by 69 per cent was recorded by packaging machinery; imports grew from 85 million Euros to 144 million Euros.

Experts frequently describe Nigeria as the economic powerhouse in West Africa, because it is the 2nd largest economy in Africa, expected to overtake South Africa in the near future and expected to become one of the world’s Top 20 economies by 2050. The country ranks 13 on the list of the largest oil producing countries, well ahead of Norway, Algeria, Angola, Kazakhstan and Qatar.

„We will make the stay in Lagos comfortable for our exhibitors as we organize a shuttle-service from the airport to the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, and from there on a daily basis to and from the Landmark Convention Centre“, says Dominik Rzepka, head of PR with fairtrade.

The brand-new Landmark Convention Centre is strategically positioned on the grounds of Landmark Village, a spectacular beach front location extending over 9.4 acres on Victoria Island, the heart of the vibrant and lively Lagos business district. Lying in close proximity to the British International School, Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Oriental Hotel, The Palms Shopping Mall, Exxon Mobil HQ and Diamond Bank HQ, this location makes it easily accessible from anywhere in the city. The Landmark Village develops over 300 meters of beachfront overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and accommodating also the Hard Rock Cafe and the Shiro Japanese Restaurant.

The Landmark Convention Centre provides modern and flexible exhibiting and conferencing solutions with a ceiling height of 14m, power connections provided at every 6m throughout the hall through underground electrical cabling network, five spacious meeting rooms and two larger conference rooms of varying sizes from 8 to 150 attendees and catering operated by Silver Plates, a top-notch international F&B chain.

The Algerian imports of packaging machinery went up from 139.2 million US dollars in 2011 to 189.6 million in 2012, an increase of 36 per cent. Imports of printing technology have even risen in the same period by 48.4 per cent, from 67.7 to 92.7 million US dollars.

Due to the large demand for exhibition space plast & printpack alger 2014 move to a larger hall within the exhibition centre in Algiers. The new venue is the Pavilion A, the so called French pavilion. It offers a central location and the larger area and it also has the advantage that plast & printpack alger can obtain their own areas each.

According to the organisers the high demand is justified with the success of the last edition in 2012. The 104 exhibitors from 17 countries were extremely satisfied with the quality of the 2,388 trade visitors.

For the 2014 edition Dominik Rzepka, Marketing and Public Relations Manager at fairtrade, expects a renewed increase in the quantity and quality of visitors. Reasons for this are further increasing momentum on the Algerian market, the strong institutional support in Algeria as well as close cooperation with major European partners such as the AHK Algeria – German-Algerian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce Advantage Austria, the Milan Chamber of Commerce Promos and the Spanish Plastics Federation AVEP.
