ASCA® launches Novel High-Performance OPV Material System for Commercial Projects

ASCA® has reached a new milestone in printed solar technology with the successful industrialization of a novel photoactive material for organic photovoltaics (OPV). The innovation enables semi-transparent modules with up to 70 W/m² power conversion efficiency. Developed together with longterm partner Raynergy Tek Incorporation (Taiwan), the innovation also expands the OPV color palette with a new turquoise module tone for design-oriented solar applications.

ASCA® continues to push the boundaries of printed solar technology with the successful conclusion of its latest industrial upscaling activities of a new photoactive material system for organic photovoltaics (OPV). This latest innovation marks a major step forward for the company’s technology roadmap and enables commercial OPV modules with a power conversion efficiency of up to 70 W/m² in a semi-transparent configuration. Compared with the current state of the art of commercialized, printed OPV modules, this represents an improvement of approximately 40%, setting a new benchmark for industrial OPV performance.

The new material system is also a technological milestone for the OPV industry in general as it is the first non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) based photoactive material system successfully commercialized for industrial-scale OPV manufacturing. By combining improved power conversion efficiency with excellent printability and stability in roll-to-roll processing, the system opens the door for a new generation of high-efficiency organic solar modules tailored for building-integrated and design-oriented energy applications.

From Laboratory Concept to Industrial Production

Over the past decade, the OPV research community has witnessed rapid advances in non-fullerene acceptor materials. While these materials have demonstrated remarkable efficiencies in laboratory devices, translating them into industrial manufacturing processes has remained a significant challenge. Printed OPV production requires material systems that not only perform well electrically and stability-wise, but also meet stringent requirements for ink formulation, coating uniformity, process stability, and large-area reproducibility.
ASCA®’s latest development bridges this gap between laboratory innovation and industrial application. Through intensive research and development efforts, the company’s teams successfully optimized a novel photoactive layer formulation and processing parameters to ensure compatibility with ASCA®’s proprietary roll-to-roll printing technology.

The result is a robust material system that can be integrated into ASCA®’s industrial OPV production platform while maintaining excellent performance across large module areas. Achieving this milestone required close collaboration across material science, process engineering, and device optimization disciplines within the company.

Strong Partnerships Driving Innovation

A key factor behind this achievement is ASCA®’s long-standing partnership with Raynergy Tek Incorporation, a leading supplier of advanced organic photovoltaic materials headquartered in Taiwan. The new photoactive material system was developed and is supplied by Raynergy Tek and has been jointly evaluated and optimized for industrial OPV manufacturing.

The collaboration reflects the importance of trusted partnerships in accelerating innovation within the emerging OPV ecosystem. By combining Raynergy Tek’s expertise in advanced organic semiconductor chemistry with ASCA®’s unique industrial printing platform, the partners have successfully translated cutting-edge material science into a commercially viable product.
For ASCA®’s customers and partners, the new material system represents a significant expansion of the company’s technology offering, providing improved performance while maintaining the flexibility and design advantages that define printed OPV solutions.

Expanding Design Possibilities in BIPV

In addition to the performance gains, the new material system introduces an important aesthetic feature that is particularly relevant for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and architectural applications. OPV modules produced with the new formulation offer an additional turquoise tone, further expanding the available color palette for semi-transparent solar solutions.

Color tunability is one of the key differentiators of organic photovoltaics compared to conventional silicon-based solar technologies. Architects, designers, and product developers increasingly seek photovoltaic solutions that can seamlessly integrate into façades, glass structures, and other design-sensitive environments. By introducing a new color option while simultaneously increasing power conversion efficiency, ASCA® enables even greater design freedom without compromising energy performance.

This capability supports a growing range of applications, from energy-generating building elements and façade integrations to design-oriented solar installations and smart urban infrastructure.

Accelerating the Commercialization of Organic Photovoltaics

The successful industrialization of a non-fullerene acceptor based material system represents an important milestone not only for ASCA® but for the broader OPV industry. As the performance gap between printed OPV and conventional photovoltaic technologies continues to narrow, the unique advantages of organic solar – such as lightweight modules, mechanical flexibility, semi-transparency, and customizable aesthetics – are becoming increasingly attractive for applications where traditional solar technologies face limitations.

With the introduction of this new high-performance material system, ASCA® reinforces its position at the forefront of industrial OPV manufacturing. The company remains committed to advancing the scalability, efficiency, and versatility of printed solar technologies, supporting the transition toward more sustainable and design-integrated energy solutions.

Looking ahead, ASCA® will continue to collaborate with partners across the global innovation ecosystem to further improve OPV performance, expand application possibilities, and accelerate the adoption of organic photovoltaics in real-world projects worldwide.
