Bonn-based IT company donates to support a sustainable water supply and improve living conditions in the Bururi community

Bonn, 1 October 2026 – BusinessCode is supporting the Burundi aid initiative organised by St. Nikolaus Krefeld with a donation of €750. The funds will go towards the purchase of two cisterns for the local parish community in Bururi. The project aims to improve the local water supply while also supporting agricultural development in the region.

Bururi is located at an altitude of around 1,800 metres. Ensuring a reliable water supply has long been a major challenge for the local population. Prolonged periods of drought further exacerbate the situation, particularly threatening livestock farming, which is an important source of livelihood for many families. The planned cistern is intended to help store water more effectively and ensure that it remains available during drier periods.

At the same time, the parish community is committed to helping people help themselves. It provides farmers with cows on favourable terms. Families benefit from milk production and, through breeding, can gradually build up their own livestock. A reliable water supply is an essential prerequisite for this approach.

During a visit to BusinessCode, Abbé Eugène Nimenya, a Catholic priest from the Diocese of Bururi and head of the local diocesan centre for agricultural development, personally presented the project. He also highlighted another challenge facing the region. Many young people are trained for office and administrative roles, although there are not enough jobs in these fields locally. If they subsequently return to their families’ farms, they often lack the practical skills required to work in agriculture.

“This project demonstrates very clearly how closely water supply, agriculture, education and economic opportunities are interconnected,” says Martin Bernemann, CEO/CTO of BusinessCode. “For us, it is important not only to provide short-term assistance, but also to support initiatives that enable local people to improve their livelihoods in the long term.”
