Headquartered in Brest, France, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa is one of France’s leading cooperative banking and insurance groups. Arkéa modernized its fraud prevention approach to create a more responsive and adaptive environment for card payments and outgoing transfers. With RiskShield by INFORM, the bank implemented a platform that enables real-time fraud detection and blocking while empowering fraud teams to adjust detection logic quickly.

With RiskShield, Arkéa chose a flexible and configurable fraud prevention platform that supports its long-term fraud prevention strategy. The platform could be adapted to Arkéa’s specific operating model, extended across multiple fraud domains, and scaled to support additional French retail banks relying on Arkéa’s fraud prevention expertise. According to Arkéa, the implementation process was structured and collaborative. The close exchange between Arkéa’s fraud teams and INFORM helped support an efficient rollout and laid the foundation for a long-term partnership. „Today, RiskShield processes approximately 70 million card transactions and 8 million credit transfers per month in real time,” says Clément Leroux, responsible for fraud detection at Crédit Mutuel Arkéa.

Real-time fraud prevention for multiple retail banking environments

In addition to using RiskShield to protect its own customers, Arkéa also provides fraud prevention services to other French banks that rely on Arkéa’s operational and fraud prevention expertise. This adds operational complexity, as different banking environments need to be managed consistently without compromising fraud prevention standards. Using RiskShield, Arkéa manages these different environments within one centralized fraud prevention framework. Dedicated workflows and case management processes can be adapted to the needs of each institution, allowing Arkéa to provide scalable fraud prevention services.

Instant adaptation to new fraud scenarios

For Arkéa, one of the key advantages of RiskShield is the ability to adjust fraud detection strategies instantly. Fraud teams can design, run on-demand simulations with historical data, and deploy new detection scenarios without lengthy development cycles or external dependencies. This allows Arkéa to respond more quickly to changing Modus Operandi in FinCrime. Leroux describes, “Since implementing RiskShield, fraud attempts in the credit transfer environment increased dramatically; at the same time, we significantly improved our ability to adapt detection strategies accordingly.”

The system’s flexibility supports continuous rule refinement, which is important to ensure ongoing alignment with emerging threats. The French bank uses richer contextual information in fraud decisions, including customer history, looking at previous transaction behavior, customer profiles, IP addresses, and user-agent information. This helps make detection scenarios more precise and contributes to improved fraud coverage and fewer false positives. “Our fraud detection has become much easier and blocking fraud in real time is the most important part for us.”

Efficiency gains in fraud operations

RiskShield centralizes rule management, case handling, and fraud operations in one environment. With integrated Case Management, Arkéa handles fraud cases directly within the platform and with optimized workflows. This improves coordination between teams, accelerates case handling, and simplifies collaboration between the 22 RiskShield stakeholders of the different operational and business groups. “Not only have we streamlined fraud handling, but we have also reduced operational processing times by approximately 20%,” says Clément Leroux about the measurable wins of the joint project.

The platform has also strengthened Arkéa’s reporting and analytics capabilities. Through standardized data exports from RiskShield, operational reporting, management reporting, monthly fraud analysis, and reviews are not an issue. This gives Arkéa greater visibility into fraud trends and allows more structured analysis of fraud developments across different customer groups and transaction types.

Long-term partnership and outlook

For Arkéa, the cooperation with INFORM has been constructive throughout implementation, daily operations, and ongoing platform evolution. The cooperation includes technical support, expert training, continuous optimization, and support for new fraud prevention and authentication requirements.

As fraud patterns, payment methods, and regulatory requirements evolve, Arkéa continues to expand its RiskShield environment. One current focus area is authentication and risk-based authentication (RBA), where the cooperation between the two is already progressing successfully. Following the deployment and integration of the solution into Arkéa’s infrastructure, productive go-live is planned in 2026.

The project reflects Arkéa’s strategy of continuously evolving its fraud prevention framework while maintaining operational flexibility and rapid adaptability to new threats and regulatory requirements. By combining flexible rule management, rapid scenario deployment and centralized case management, Arkéa has established a scalable real-time transaction monitoring framework capable of adapting continuously to evolving fraud scenarios and supporting fraud prevention operations across multiple retail banking environments.
